Questionmark has published the second edition of Superlist Environment (Superlijst Groen) in 2023. This survey provides insight into the sustainability performance of Dutch supermarkets anno 2023, their improvements over the past two years and our recommendations for progress. Superlist Green 2023 distinguishes four themes: climate plan, protein transition, sustainable agriculture, and sustainable packaging.
The survey results show that supermarkets are making progress in transparency about their sustainability performance and in setting increasingly ambitious targets. However, translating these into concrete measures in assortment, promotion and shop design is still a long way off. Supermarkets thus still have a lot of untapped potential for using their influence to help make agriculture or the Dutch diet more sustainable, on the one hand.
In the media, Superlijst Groen 2023 was well picked up again. NRC, AD, FD, Telegraaf, Volkskrant, NOS and Nu.nl wrote about it and it was also heard on BNR and NOS Radio 1 news. At the same time, we noticed that behind the scenes, the race to the top among supermarkets is going strong. Piece by piece, supermarkets are supplying new information at the last minute or trying to improve on the research, trying to gain a higher spot in the rankings. The excitement prior to the publication of Superlist Green 2023 was high.
The urgency to make the food system more sustainable is unchanged and social tensions around this issue are increasing. This second edition of Superlist Green shows that supermarkets are working on the topic of sustainability, but that improvement in practice still needs to take place. Superlist plays a crucial role in constructively stimulating the race to the top, also in the future.
