ClearRivers – Modular Litter Trap

ClearRivers – Modular Litter Trap

A unique modular Plastic Catcher has been placed in the Riedijkshaven of Dordrecht. The Litter Trap collects the floating waste in the surface water and prevents it from flowing further. A lot of floating waste flows from the Wantij into the Riedijkshaven. With the incoming tide, waste flows into the harbor, but is often eventually carried away by the outgoing tide. The Plastic Catcher will, in particular, prevent the latter.

CLEAR RIVERS has been installing Litter Traps in the Netherlands and abroad since 2017. But see the need to develop this new model, which is compact, modular, easy to install and affordable. The modular Plastic Catcher is so compact that it fits in the back of a van and can be placed by two people. The catcher in Dordrecht is produced modularly from recycled plastic and brought to Dordrecht. Where it was assembled and launched on the quay. The catcher is anchored with compact tubular piles. This keeps the installation in place, but allows it to move with the changing water level. By collecting the plastic in the Riedijkshaven, further spread and fragmentation of the plastic is prevented.

The Litter Trap consists of a collection container, the Litter Trap, with a floating screen attached. The screen guides the floating debris to the Litter Trap where it is “caught”. By emptying the installation weekly, plastic pollution is effectively tackled and further spread is prevented.

CLEAR RIVERS is currently working on the second installation of a modular Litter Trap in the Buizengat of Rotterdam. This catcher will be another improvement compared to the Litter Trap in Dordrecht.

After this, CLEAR RIVERS expects to be able to place many more modular Litter Traps in national and international waters and thus make an important contribution to plastic-free rivers.

About CLEAR RIVERS

The CLEAR RIVERS Foundation was founded in 2014 and is registered as a brand name of the Recycled Island Foundation (RIF). The foundation aims to reduce the amount of plastic in the seas and oceans. Most plastics reach the open water via rivers. CLEAR RIVERS therefore focuses on collecting the plastics in rivers before they reach the open water, informing about plastic pollution and recycling the collected plastics into new and sustainable products.
